Born John Kavanagh in Dublin, changed his name to join the British Army and lied about his age he said he was born in 1945 and joined up when he was 16. Initially joined 1RWF (not sure what year but think it was 1963).

Then served with 2RRF and as an instructor at DQD.Left the Army in 1981 whilst serving as the Provost Sgt.
He was a prolific boxer and coached the 2nd Battalions boxing team when it won the major units cup.

After leaving the Army he served as a Prison Officer at HMP Maze and HMP Crumlin Road.
